ABOUT AUSTIN:
In DeKalb County, there's a candidate who embodies a passion for education, a commitment to community, and a vision for revitalizing our schools. Meet Austin McDonald, a former teacher, advocate for exceptional people, and proud father, running for School Board District 1.
Raised in the rural landscapes of South Georgia, education has always been a cornerstone of Austin's life. Born into a family of educators—including his grandmother, aunt, brother, and sister-in-law—Austin's journey into teaching was both natural and deeply rooted. His first teaching post in 2012 at Lithia Springs Elementary School marked the beginning of a almost decade-long career dedicated to shaping young minds and fostering academic growth.
It was during his time at Lithia Springs that Austin's path intersected with his future wife, Christine Culver. A Dunwoody native and former homecoming queen of Dunwoody High School, Christine's roots drew Austin closer to the vibrant community of Dunwoody. After Austin and Christine married, Austin looked for teaching opportunities close to home leading him to Cornerstone Christian Academy. Here, he not only taught physical education but also took on roles as an enrichment team leader and a coach, fostering a love for sports and wellness among his students.
Beyond the classroom, Austin's dedication to education extended into advocacy and community engagement. As a keynote speaker and contract teacher for a Georgia nonprofit, he championed the rights of students with disabilities, empowered them through financial literacy, and prepared them for the workforce. His impact reached even further when he was appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council by the governor in 2019, advocating for inclusivity and accessibility in education statewide.
Austin's journey in education was not without its challenges. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, he faced learning obstacles head-on and emerged stronger and more determined than ever. His personal experiences with learning challenges fueled his advocacy efforts, driving him to empower students facing similar obstacles and advocate for their rights.
As his family grew, Austin made the difficult decision to step away from education for a more flexible career in real estate. This transition allowed his wife, Christine, to pursue her ultimate dream of being a stay-at-home mother. Despite the change in career paths, Austin's commitment to education and community remained unwavering.
Now, as a candidate for the DeKalb County School Board District 1, Austin's focus is clear: to transform DeKalb County schools into a beacon of excellence. His motivation is deeply personal, with five children—his oldest set to start kindergarten in the fall of 2024 attending local public elementary school. It's a family tradition of education and community that drives Austin's commitment to action.
Having heard firsthand accounts from his wife's family about the greatness of DeKalb County schools and his grandmother's memories of professional development in the county, Austin is inspired to roll up his sleeves and get to work. He believes that with hard work, determination, collaboration, and community support, DeKalb County can once again reclaim its position as a crown jewel of Georgia's education system.
Austin's platform is centered on three key pillars: financial transparency, literacy rates, and representation. He understands the importance of accountability in stewarding taxpayer dollars, the fundamental role of literacy in shaping young minds, and the necessity of community representation and open communication within the school system.
It's time to stop talking and start doing. With Austin McDonald leading the charge, together, we can bring about real and lasting change in our schools. Join him on this journey to transform DeKalb County schools for the better. It's time to get to work for the kids.
